The National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory – NCJOSI, is a national entry-level examination that was developed as an alternative to conventional criminal justice written entrance examinations. It was developed by IOS, Inc. Or Industrial/Organizational Solutions Inc.
The National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory – NCJOSI, was designed specifically to predict success for criminal justice positions (i.e., police and deputy sheriff), and to be in strict compliance with all federal, state and local testing guidelines and regulations. The NCJOSI helps agencies select officers who will be successful working in departments that are either now using, or are moving toward, a community-oriented or problem-solving approach to public safety. It was designed to provide both a cognitive (i.e., problem-solving) and job related attitude/behavioral-orientation (i.e., criminal justice officer orientation) component.
NCJOSI I vs. NCJOSI II
The NCJOSI I has two sections—a cognitive ability section and a behavioral section. The cognitive ability section includes 10 subject areas. In contrast, the NCJOSI II only contains four subject areas in the cognitive ability section.

We cover all the categories but focus on the most important and most difficult subjects described below:
Inductive Reasoning: The ability to identify patterns or common traits in objects or information. Police officers often need to sift through seemingly disconnected facts and make judgments about how they fit together. Classification and Series Completion are used to evaluate this area of competency.
Deductive Reasoning: The ability to draw appropriate conclusions from information provided. Police are often required to make sense of evidence by drawing conclusions about its relevance and meaning. Syllogisms and True Time tasks are used to evaluate this area of competency.
Quantitative Reasoning: The ability to apply basic arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions to solve problems.
Police often need to determine things like rates of speed or stopping distance. This ability is tested through Word Problems and Arithmetic tasks.
Besides the tests three main areas we included sub areas:
Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning & Writing Sample to cover all the bases.
NCJOSI Sub areas:
Reading Comprehension: Designed to measure your ability to read, with understanding and insight, examples of lengthy and complex materials similar to those commonly encountered in law school. Many deductive reasoning questions are in a reading comprehension format.
Analytical Reasoning: Designed to measure your ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw conclusions about the structure.
Logical Reasoning: Evaluates your ability to understand, analyze, criticize, and complete arguments.
Writing Sample: This test evaluates the candidate’s ability to organize information in a clear, coherent and comprehensive manner, and to make conclusions from given facts. The candidate is presented with a scenario in which factual details are jumbled or represented in a nonchronological manner.
Why did we include the sub areas?
Some departments have included these sub areas in their NCJOSI format. Plus, although there may be some conceptual overlapping the basic premise is; by learning Reading Compensation, Analytical Reasoning & Logical Reasoning principles and strategies, you will be able to handle any NCJOSI questions posed.
Analytical Reasoning & Logical Reasoning questions present a higher degree of difficulty in regards to Chapter 9: NCJOSI Overview reasoning problems and by learning how to handle them you will be better prepared for your NCJOSI. It would be like running 7 miles every day to prepare for a 5 mile race. Running the 5 miles would be much easier. By learning how to handle the most difficult reasoning problems it will be much easier to master your NCJOSI.
